Neutral Color Palettes

Neutral palettes are built from grays, creams, sands and greiges, with color appearing only as a trace. It is the least dramatic pattern in the library and the one most likely to be used for years without being retired, because there is nothing in it to date.

Neutral sets carry a specific risk: with so little hue, small differences in value do all the work, so a set designed without care reads as a series of nearly identical grays. The palettes below come from the library's neutral collection, recomputed from the catalog, and each opens onto a page where the six colors, their roles and their contrast ratios can be read precisely rather than estimated from a thumbnail.

The useful thing to check here is the spacing between the mid values. A neutral palette with three distinct mids can build surfaces, borders and secondary text; one with three nearly identical mids can only build one of those. Because there is no hue to carry the hierarchy, the difference between the values has to do all of it, and that is where a neutral palette is either well made or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between neutral and gray?
Neutral includes the warm side of gray, such as cream, sand and greige, not only true gray.
Why do neutral palettes need a dark anchor?
Without one, every value sits in the middle and the palette loses hierarchy.
Which industries suit neutral palettes?
Interior, architecture, fashion and any product where the content should carry the color rather than the interface.
