White Color Palettes

White palettes are about the exact white rather than about white itself. A palette whose light stop is pure white behaves very differently from one built on an off-white with a trace of cream, and that single decision sets the temperature for every other color in the set. The palettes below use white as a role rather than as an empty background, which is why they read as composed instead of unfinished.

These are the sets whose recorded colors include white, ordered by Visual Intelligence Index score and then by saves. Each opens onto a page with its six colors in role order, their measured contrast and the code needed to reproduce them.

These palettes are decided by their light stop, so that is the color worth examining first. A true white base gives a crisp, technical result; a cream or bone base gives a warmer one that holds photography better. The palettes here cover both, and the difference between them is small enough in a thumbnail that the palette page is the place to judge it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pure white or off-white better as a base?
Off-white is usually easier: it reduces glare and gives shadows and borders something to register against.
How much white should a palette carry?
One or two roles; a palette where most roles are white has no hierarchy left.
What makes a white palette look cheap?
Pure white beside a mid gray with no warm or cool direction, which reads as unstyled.
