Gray Color Palettes

Gray palettes are the most common foundation in the library, and the easiest to get subtly wrong. Because gray carries no hue of its own, the differences between its steps decide whether a set feels expensive or flat, and a single warm or cool step among neutral ones is enough to unbalance the whole palette.

The sets below use gray as their structure, sometimes with a single colored accent and sometimes without one at all. Ordered by Visual Intelligence Index score and then by saves, each opens onto a page showing its six colors in role order with measured contrast and code, which is where the quality of a gray palette becomes visible.

These palettes are structural, and the ones worth using have at least three clearly different values. When you open one, check the two middle colors: if they are close, the palette can carry a surface and a border but not a second surface; if they separate, it can build a layered interface without adding a color. The accent, where there is one, is usually doing less than it looks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a gray palette be warm or cool?
Match it to the accents: cool grays with blue and silver, warm grays with cream, brown and earth.
How many gray steps does a palette need?
Three or four distinct values is usually enough for surface, border, secondary text and body text.
Why do two grays look wrong together?
Because a small hue difference becomes obvious when the two are stacked as background and panel.
