Brown is the family that grounds everything else. It is a dark, desaturated orange at heart, which is why it carries associations with wood, leather, coffee, soil and paper rather than with a single object. In design it does quiet work: a brown in a palette stops the other colors from floating, and a warm brown used as a background makes screens feel less clinical.
The family runs from a pale sand through tan and camel into chestnut, walnut and a near-black espresso, and the swatches below are ordered along that path from the lightest to the darkest. Read as a scale, the family shows why some browns feel like natural materials while others feel like an old photograph. Each swatch has a name, a hex value and RGB codes.
Browns are best chosen by what they imitate rather than by their hex value: the pale entries read as sand and paper, the mid entries as leather and wood, and the dark entries as coffee and soil. That is why the family is so useful as a grounding color, and why it goes wrong when two browns imitating different materials are placed side by side. Picking from one zone at a time keeps a brown palette coherent.
